IGME started its activity as IGSR in 1952, continued as ETHIGME (1972-1976) and then as IGME (1976 to date).

The Magnetic Observatory of Penteli (MOP) is operational since 1958 under the auspices of the institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME). The present site of the MOP is on the Penteli mountain far away from city or industrial noise (~30 Km far from Athens). Until the last update it worked for almost fourty years based on photographic method for monitoring geomagnetic variations.

Since 1999 a new installation of modern instruments is designed to meet INTERMAGNET’s operational standards and data quality requirements and to provide one-second data. The most recent efforts are orientated to the efficient and reliable data transmission over GPRS mobile network and to the development of web applications providing data services.
